Sewer System Warning Signs
Many of us hate to think about our septic system or the town sewer, but these systems are absolutely vital parts of our lives and should not be avoided. If you’re a homeowner and you’re concerned about the health and quality of your septic system don’t wait to confront the issue. Not sure if there’s cause for concern? There are plenty of warning signs that will give you the heads up that your sewer system needs repair.
Some common signs of needing septic system repairs are water blockages in the home, outdoor smells and changes in the landscape of the drain field. The most common maintenance required is pumping, which must be done to prolong the health and longevity of the system as well as to prevent overflow. Systems should be pumped at least every few years, if not yearly. Other common repairs include drain field maintenance and general indoor plumbing fixes.
A common cause of problems is excess water being flushed through the system. This can be avoided by repairing leaky plumbing fixtures and replacing toilets with low flow models. Additionally, if toilets are overflowing, or backing up into bathtubs, it’s likely that the septic system is overloaded and needs the attention of a professional.
Signs of a more serious problem, requiring major repairs or replacement, are usually noticed in the drainfield area. If sections of vegetation are looking greener than ever before, or a certain patch of grass begins growing gangbusters, a septic overload is likely the cause. When waste is improperly released into the landscape, it acts as a fertilizer and causes suspicious patches of growth.
Additionally, if a sewage gas smell is present, there is likely a major issue within the drainfield and septic system repairs or replacement may be required. Gases from septic waste rise quickly to the surface in a system that is not processing or draining as it should. The presence of pools of sewage or foul-smelling liquid are a cause for concern and an immediate call to a professional. These pools indicate that the underlying soil is saturated with wastewater. They are hazardous to the environment and human health and should be addressed only by an expert. When proper attention is given to professional maintenance and small repairs, a septic system will last much longer and remain healthier.
